| FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE…CONTACT TIM FULLER AT tim@erehwonfarm.com or at 630- 443-8271. Media Note: More information on this farm is posted on our web site at www. erehwonfarm.com. Erehwon Farm Begins Production and Sale of Naturally Grown Vegetables June 3, 2005, St. Charles, IL We are proud to announce that Erehwon Farm, a family owned and operated farm has commenced operations at its new location on IL Route 38 approximately 3 miles west of Randall Road. It’s sited on the Mongerson Farm of The Garfield Farm Museum. The farm grows organic vegetables, herbs, cut flowers, and potted herbs and perennials. Vegetables are distributed mainly via a 75-family subscription program (CSA) ; subscribers have a choice of on-farm weekly pick-up or delivery to Lombard, Glen Ellyn, Wheaton, and Elgin. Subscribers purchase a share of what the farm produces and have choices about the variety of produce they receive. Share costs are usually less than the cost of purchasing similar vegetables in high-end supermarkets and the vegetables are much fresher. The farm specializes in unusual varieties of vegetables that are not usually available in local supermarkets. Over 40 varieties of heirloom tomatoes will be grown this year. These heirlooms are noted for their superior taste but their thin skins make them difficult to store and transport. Salad greens and much of the produce is picked each morning and distributed in the afternoon to ensure freshness, high nutritional content, and sensational aroma and taste. Subscribers also may also opt for a weekly seasonal flower arrangement. Many subscribers volunteer their time to help with the chores and to make improvements to the farm. Erehwon Farm’s produce, flowers and potted plants are also available at the Elgin Farmers’ Market on Thursdays, the St. Charles Farmers’ Market on Fridays, and the Batavia Farmers’ Market on Saturdays. We deliver our excess produce to local food distribution points such as the Batavia Interfaith Food Pantry and the St. Charles Salvation Army. The farm practices sustainable growing techniques aimed at yearly improving the soil and environment. Our goal is to plant intensively by producing our own compost and eliminating use of non-organic chemicals, pesticides and herbicides. Organic materials are collected from local horse owners, businesses, and subscribers then composted and spread into the growing beds to provide all the nutrients the plants need. Water is conserved by the use of drip irrigation. Electrical power needs are greatly reduced by harnessing passive solar energy, wind power, and heat from the compost piles. We want to share what we have learned with the community through educational events throughout the year. We plan to offer information on seed starting, composting, soil preparation, harvesting, and vegetable preparation, season extension, and other topics. More information can be obtained by calling Tim Fuller or Beth Propst at 630-443-8271 or by visiting the farm web site at www.erehwonfarm.com. Tours are available by appointment. |
